An Apple Pie for Casey Sheehan

Story by David Hirsh  (Iraq); Printed by Waldorf Carathers in states - Imagine the expression on the face of the child who encountered him. Her name is Fadilah . She is 7 years old. Playing alone along the tattered road near the dilapitaed building her family is living in as a result of the war, the bloodied apparition startled her when it first appeared. Fadilah's name means distinguished and learned; and she is. "His uniform was covered in blood and on it, I read the name Sheehan." Casey Sheehan, son of outspoken war critic Cindy Sheehan, died while on patrol in Iraq on April 4th, 2005. "I had heard of an American woman whose son was killed in the war with the same last name. She is a very popular woman here in Iraq."  Fadilah says the apparition appeared to be suffering. "My fear grew as it neared, for the look upon his face was not pleasant. He drew his weapon; and I froze. "Suicide bomber," he spit! I have done nothing to you," I withdrew! "Terrorist," he barked! "It is not my fault the thing that happened to you!" "Where's my apple pie!"  He yelled. A terrible sound tore over our words. It was as if it were the sound of his gun. A terrible smile pulled across his face. Slowly, I began to back up. He proceeded with a mad laughter. Then, he grabbed his arm. It appeared to be wounded. Next, he began to cry. A mighty swirl of dust engulfed him.  The terrible sound of  a roadside bomb echoed in the distance. Later I learned several of our policeman  had been killed by it. My sorrow was for the ghost of the bitter American soldier caught, like a fly in a web, in the great and awful desert sand and heat.

 
Fadilah's story is startling. But she is not the only Iraqi child who claims to have been accosted by a fallen U.S. GI; and, too, she is not the only child who claims to have seen Casey. MORE
